WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING-1

III B.Tech I Semester(R05) Supplementary Examinations, May/June 2010
                                             WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING-1
1. (a) Describe the principle and working of Symon's non-recording raingauge. How does Indian stan-
dard raingauge di®er from Symons raingauge.
(b) Describe step by step procedure involved in the analysis for developing intensity - frequency -
duration relationships. Sketch a typical set of these curves.
[8+8]
2. (a) Bring out the di®erence between evaporation, transpiration, evapotranspiration and consumptive
use.
(b) A watershed of 48 sq. km produces a runo® of 2 M m3 from the rainfall pattern of the storm
given below. Calculate ©-index.

3. (a) Describe the method of deriving unit hydrograph from complex storms.
(b) A 4 h hydrograph for a project site in Mahanadi Basin is given below. Calculate 2-h UH by
S-hydrograph approach. [8+8]

4. (a) What are the various methods of reservoir routing. Write down the steps involved in ISD method.
(b) Observed values of in°ows and out°ows at two sections of a river reach are given below. Determine
K and X between the reach using Muskingum method of routing.

5. (a) Describe with the help of sketches, some of the common types of strainers used in tube wells.
(b) Explain the percussion method of drilling a tube well. [8+8]
6. (a) Explain the various types of ¯lters used in drip irrigation?. Explain various disadvantages of drip
irrigation?
(b) Explain zig-zag method of irrigation along with a neat sketch [10+6]
7. (a) De¯ne the following terms:
i. Culturable command area,
ii. Kor period,
iii. Capacity factor,
iv. Rabi and Kharif crops.
(b) An irrigation canal has gross command area of 80,000ha out of which 85% is culturable irrigable.
The intensity of irrigation for Kharif season is 30%. and for Rabi season is 60%. Find the
discharge required at the head of the canal if the duty at its head is 800ha/cumecs for Kharif
season and 1700ha/cumecs for Rabi season. [8+8]
8. (a) What is meant by `regime'? Di®erentiate between regime in natural rivers and in arti¯cial
channels.
(b) Design an irrigation channel section for the following data.
Discharge= 40 cumecs,
Silt factor=1.0,
Side slopes=1
2 :1,

Determine the longitudinal slope also. [8+8]
